    Description

For sale is a good early 19
    th
C coin silver lidded sugar bowl with an eagle head mark, likely from Baltimore, but possibly down to Virginia.  The piece is about 8 inches tall by 7 ½ inches wide over the handles and weighs 482 grams.  The removable domed lid has an acorn-shaped finial.  It has die rolled bands of gadrooning and roses are the rim and simple angular strap handles.  It is monogrammed “SJC” on one side.  It is marked on the edge of the foot with an eagle head in a circle; McGrew gives this an undetermined mid-Atlantic origin, but it appears on a pair of spectacles marked by J Adam of Alexandria Virginia.

Condition on the piece is fairly good.  There are solder repairs inside the lid under the finial; it may have been removable originally.  Otherwise there are just some minor edge dents and the side of the foot is pushed in slightly.  A fine piece of coin silver hollowware.
