GILMANTON NEW HAMPSHIRE ANTIQUE COIN SILVER MARRIAGE SPOON MOULTON C.1810

Description

A very interesting piece of American coin silver by William Moulton IV of Newburyport Massachusetts.  This spoon was purchased or gifted to Samuel Gilman and Sarah Jones, Samuel, the grandson of the namesake of Gilmanton New Hampshire. I think the spoon dates a bit later than the marriage date engraved on the back of the handle.  It's a very interesting piece of New England silver.  This spoon has some curl to the lip of the spoon, it has been filed at mid handle at some point in it's life. It also has some bends than can be easily felt when you run your fingers over it.  I believe I could bend this back into shape but I'm going to leave that task to the buyer. This is a tablespoon, it measures about 9 1/8" long.  It is engraved on the obverse top of the handle with a monogram that very closely resembles 18th century monograms, probably suggesting that the silversmith was in advanced age or that the buyer wanted this "old style".  The monogram is "SG", probably for Sarah Gilman, perhaps this was a gift from Samuel to Sarah?  The Moulton family of silversmiths was the longest running family of silversmiths in American history. A fascinating piece of American silver!
