Description
Please examine photos. They are THIS item and are part of the description. I do not use stock photos or photos of other people’s items. This is a historical artifact and rare coin silver tea spoon with a fiddle back handle and wings. It is marked in a toothed cartouche reverse "W R PITMAN". William Robinson Pitman (1804-1891) was the son of Remember Goddard and Benjamin Pitman (1766-1811). He worked as a gold and silversmith in Providence Rhode Island from 1825 to 1835 and in New Bedford Massachusetts from 1835 to 1856 when he and his second wife and children moved to Newport Rhode Island to operate a general store and jewelry (1856-1889). He died 1891 back in New Bedford. It is recorded "He was a committed abolitionist." I was able to find an 1836 advertisement in the New Bedford Directory and three examples of his marks on-line, but no silver objects whatsoever. If you are a Pitman descendant, or know one, this may be your only chance to obtain a piece of his handiwork.
